EDUCATION
Education is compulsory for 9 years in Costa Rica, children from the ages 6 to 13 must attend school. 99% of children in Grades 1 to 6 attend school and 71% of students between grades 7 and 9 attend school. Costa Rica is the most literate country in Central America with 96% of it's population being literate.
There are more than 4000 schools in Costa Rica some public and some private. It also has universities available, also public and private. High School goes up to 11th grade and can be found in most communities along with primary schools.
In primary school the curriculum consists of subjects such as English, Spanish, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Religion and Social Studies. There is not a lot of gender imbalance as it is compulsory for children to go to school and most kids do attend school.
